Film is no longer controlled primarily by taste, relationships, or discovery.

It is controlled by systems.

Today, whether a film survives has less to do with how good it is — and more to do with whether it can:

pass technical delivery
clear legal compliance
meet platform specifications
survive quality control
report cleanly

In other words:

Distribution became software.

And most filmmakers were never taught how to operate inside it.

Why Great Films Still Don’t Make It Out Alive

Most independent films don’t fail creatively.

They fail because:

deliverables are discovered too late
costs escalate after contracts are signed
vendors and timelines are controlled by others
reporting keeps films in permanent deficit
ownership exists on paper, not in practice

By the time filmmakers understand what’s happening, the leverage is gone.

Not because they were careless.
But because this layer was never explained clearly.

This Isn’t About Killing the Dream

Creativity still matters.
Story still matters.

But art alone does not move a film through a technical system.

Hope without preparation doesn’t protect films.
Understanding does.
